What is Food Not Lawns

FoCo Food Not Lawns is a resource hub for gardening information and lawn converstions. The group offers:

Educational workshops relating to health, food, and skill sharing

Free expertise to those wishign to create micro food spaces in yards/Lawns

Facilitation and advice for working with business/community partners to turn decorative landscaping into edible ones

Excess produce to distribute to our unhoused neighbors

Pairting those without lanws with those who have them to create cooperative spaces

How is Food Not Lawns different from other groups?

Food not Lawns operates on a mutual aid model and actively work to remove all barriers to participation. You don’t even need a lawn! There are no membership fees or dues. Everyone participates to their own level of comfort, energy, and expertise, and everyone has equal input as to how this
organization will operate. There are no directors and no volunteers. We are all equally able to fill either/both roles. Everyone has something meaningful to contribute! We are also mutual aid oriented in that this work aims to create healing relationships between people and the earth
and other living beings. Our work also models how to self-organize, decenter "authority", dream the world we want to live in, and practice our values in the present moment as best we can. All ages, abilities and identities welcome!

What if I don't have a lawn or a garden?

You don't have to! The idea of Food Now Lawns is one based on community: there are people who have garden space but not the ability to garden, while others lack the land but have the time to garden. What if we could connect those two people alongside building community around sharing the abundance offered by nature, and share the skills we know related to gardening and food preservation?

Resources Hub

Mother Earth Free Market is an experiment in solidatity economics. What if we didn't need to buy new things/throw away old things, but instead could trade, repurpose, and reuse? The space is like a clothing swap but with everything: books clothes, plants, food, tools, art, kitchen items. Or bring a skill to share: bring a sewing maching if you know how to mend, bike tools to fix someone's bike. Please take home items that you bring that are not claimed.

Bring items you want to find a new home or skills you want to share or just yourself! The space is generally in an ADA accessible location where cars can be loaded/unloaded near-by. Folks will set-up their items on tables, on the grass, or wherever is available. Folks who bring items can wander or sit with their items. The location and time varies but is always outdoors. The hosts of the event are all volunteers so please bring items home that are not claimed.

Things to know about showing up/accessability:

Mother Earth Markets are mostly outdoors so may be rescheduled due to weather. Please check this website or ClotheThePeople on Instagram if there is poor weather day-of.

The Market is ADA accessible, there are handicap accessible bathrooms near-by.

General

There are two types of library cards: computer access cards and full library cards.

Computer Access Card: free of charge. Can be obtained even if you do not have a permanent address.

Full Library Card: free of charge. Requires a permanent address.

Computer Access

When you have either a Computer Access Card or a Full Library Card, you are able to have computer access and free print credits (at the time of writing that is 200 credits per month).

Library of Things

With a Full Library Card, you have access to the Library of Things. There are items that can be borrowed, just like you would borrow a book, for free! Items vary by library, but may include craft kits, passes to visit local museums and outdoors spaces, health and wellness supplies, kids activities, and kitchen supplies.
